  5. Prepare 6 cloves garlic minced
  6. Get 1 medium onion, sliced

  8. Prepare 1 cup peanut butter
  9. Take 1/2 cup shrimp paste
  10. Prepare 3 cups pork/beef broth
  11. Take 1/2 cup toasted ground rice
  12. Make ready 1 tsp achuete powder
  13. Take 1 tbsp fish sauce
  14. Get salt & pepper for taste

Kare-kare can also be made with seafood. Kare kare is a Filipino stew with a rich, thick, and flavorful peanut sauce that is served with bagoong guisado (sauteed shrimp paste). The traditional kare kare recipe uses oxtail or tripe. However, you can also use pork (pork hocks, calves feet, or pig feet), beef stew meat, and seafood (prawns, squid, and mussels).

Instructions to make Kare-Kare:
  1. In a large pot boil ox tail until soft then set aside. Usually takes 2 hours. For faster result put in oven and bake for 10 minutes each side at 400 degrees before boiling
  2. In a wok, sauté garlic and onion
  3. Add pork & fish sauce and cook for a 5 minutes
  4. Add 2 1/2 cups of pork/beef broth, salt, achuete, ground peanuts and peanut butter and simmer for 5 minutes
  5. Add toasted ground rice and simmer for 5 minutes
  6. Add vegetables and cook until vegetables are tender. Stir occasionally.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste
  8. Serve with white steamed rice and bagoong (shrimp paste)
